F/V DANGEROUS CAPE

The F/V Dangerous Cape is more than just a vessel; it’s the heart of a family-run operation that sustainably harvests halibut and sablefish in the Gulf of Alaska. Based out of Homer, Alaska, and captained by lifelong commercial fisherman Erik Velsko, the F/V Dangerous Cape embodies the spirit of dedication, hard work, and family values.

Types of Gear

Longline Pots

Longline pots are connected by a long line and are baited to attract the desired catch. The gear is left to soak, then hauled up, allowing for the catch to be sorted and non-target species to be released unharmed. This technique minimizes habitat disruption and has almost zero bycatch. Pots are the most effective way to catch target species with minimal environmental impact, making them an ideal choice for responsible, sustainable fishing.

Longline Hooks

Longline hooks is a process where a main line with numerous baited hooks is deployed in the water. This method targets specific species, reducing bycatch and allowing for each fish to be individually handled. The precise nature of longline hooks ensures high-quality, sustainably caught seafood.
